As we get ready to enjoy spring and summer here in Alaska, we’d like to remind everyone of a few important community standards that help keep our neighborhoods running smoothly and safely for all.
🗑️ Trash & Recycle Day
Please remember to place roll carts out no later than 6 AM the day of pickup to ensure service, and bring them into your garage by 7 PM the same day. It is prohibited to bring roll carts out the day before pick up day, and they may not be left out the day after. This can lead to wildlife encounters and will result in a violation with housing and JBER’s Conservation Law Enforcement.
🚎 Recreational Vehicles
RVs, including motor homes, travel trailers, tent campers, boats, trailers, ATVs, and snow machines—are only permitted in housing areas from Friday through Monday.
For storage options, check JBER’s Outdoor Rec website.
🔥 Grill, Smoker & Fire Pit Safety
With summer cookout season here, it’s a great time to review a few safety rules from the Aurora Military Housing Resident Handbook:
- Grills, smokers, chimineas, and fire pits must be used a minimum of 10 feet from any combustible fixture, such as a fence or the side of your home.
- They cannot be used on any wooden or other combustible surface, or inside the garage.
- Before storing them closer than 10 feet to your home, they must be completely cooled, fuel tanks closed, and all ash material removed.
🐻 Bear Awareness
With wildlife becoming more active, it’s critical to stay bear-aware. Here are a few tips to help:
- Never leave food, trash, or pet waste outside overnight.
- Secure your trash lids properly.
- Report any bear sightings to Security Forces at (907) 552-7070.
Our homes are located in a shared habitat, help us protect both residents and animals by reducing attractants.
🐾 Pets: Leashes & Clean-Up
All pets must be leashed when outside your home or fenced yard. Unleashed pets can be a safety risk and lead to lease violations. When in your fenced yard, pets must still be under your control; tethering and monitoring pets is required to prevent them from crossing the fence line. And don’t forget, cleaning up after your pet is required. Let’s keep common areas clean for all residents!
🚗 Vehicle Parking Reminders
Please be mindful of where and how you park:
- Do not block sidewalks, driveways, mailboxes, or fire lanes.
- Avoid parking on the “No Parking” side of the street.
- Inoperable or unregistered vehicles should not be stored in front of homes or within neighborhoods.
Improper parking can delay impact emergency access and inconvenience neighbors.
👨👩👧 Child Safety & Supervision
With longer days and warmer weather, kids will be spending more time outside, and we love seeing our community come alive! As a reminder, per the Aurora Military Housing Resident Handbook, parents, guardians, and hosts are responsible for the conduct and safety of children in their charge.
- Know where your kids are. Encourage children to play in designated areas like playgrounds and basketball courts, not in neighbors’ yards or in the street. Make sure they know the community rules and how to reach you at all times.
- Supervision matters. JBER has an unattended youth policy in place to help keep kids safe. See hyperlink for age-appropriate supervision guidelines.
🛝 Community Parks
These areas are meant to be safe, fun, and welcoming spaces for children and families—and we need your help to keep them that way.
- Help Us Keep Them Clean & Safe
- If you witness vandalism or see damage at a park, please report it right away to Security Forces (907) 552-7070. Reporting issues early helps ensure a faster response and reduces the chance of future problems.
- Talk With Your Kids and Teens
- Please remind children and teens about the importance of taking care of community spaces. A quick conversation at home goes a long way in helping everyone understand the shared responsibility we all have.
