Preparing for a Possible Volcanic Eruption: What Residents Need to Know

With the possibility of Mount Spurr erupting, it’s important for residents to be aware of the potential impacts and take proactive steps to ensure their safety. While it’s impossible to predict an eruption with certainty, preparedness can make all the difference

JBER provides up-to-date emergency information through JBER Connect and the JBER website. We encourage all residents to monitor these channels, as well as alerts from the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) and the National Weather Service (NWS).

To help you prepare, please review this flyer from JBER’s Office of Emergency Management.

After an Eruption

During emergencies, AMH may utilize our website, email list, and flyers to communicate.

  • AMH may need to access your home to temporarily disable whole home fan systems, install filters in furnaces, and place filters over fresh air intakes should ash make its way to JBER. Due to the time sensitive nature of these fixes, we may have to enter homes on an emergency basis, with little to no advanced notice.
  • Should a significant eruption event occur that impacts JBER, AMH may opt to temporarily pause routine work orders to focus our resources on emergency response.

While we hope for the best, preparing for a volcanic eruption is a responsibility we all share. By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, you can protect your home, health, and family. We will continue to monitor updates and share important information as it becomes available.

For more information, visit the Alaska Volcano Observatory at www.avo.alaska.edu and follow local emergency management agencies for updates.
