Safety Alert: Children & Snow Piles (2026)

We strongly encourage all parents and guardians to talk with their children about the dangers of playing on, in, or around snow piles, especially those located near roadways.

Why are snow piles unsafe?

Snow piles may look harmless, but they pose serious risks. Tunnels or snow forts can collapse without warning, potentially trapping or burying a child. In addition, snow piles near roadways may be moved, reshaped, or added to by snow removal contractors during or after snow events.

It is not always visible to equipment operators that tunnels or play areas exist within snow piles. Snow can also muffle sound, making it difficult for a child to hear approaching vehicles, and tunnel entrances may not be visible from the roadway.

While snow removal operators routinely stop to inspect their surroundings, the most effective way to prevent a tragic accident is through supervision and ongoing conversations with children about the dangers of playing near snow piles.
