Living in a close-knit community like ours, it’s important to adhere to guidelines that ensure the safety, cleanliness, and overall well-being of our neighborhoods. Recently, there have been an increase in reports of wildlife activity due to improper trash disposal and game processing. These issues not only pose risks to our safety but also disrupts our communities. Here is what we can do to mitigate them.

Steps We Can Take

Adhere to Trash Pickup Schedules: Ensure that roll carts are only placed outside on designated pickup days and are able to fully close. Roll carts must be stored inside of the garage at all times. If you miss a pickup, store your roll cart inside your garage until the next scheduled day. This simple step can significantly reduce wildlife attraction.

  • AMH provides one roll cart and one recycling bin, if you require more, please contact Alaska Waste.

Use Secure Containers: If your roll cart is damaged, contact our Maintenance team to request a replacement.

Exterior Storage Guidelines: There are some important requirements to consider when storing outdoor equipment or feeding pets.

  • Grills, smokers, chimineas, fire pits, and firewood: These items must be stored in the fenced-in yard areas of AMH units. When using them, do not leave them unattended, and be sure to clean grills thoroughly after each use to prevent attracting wildlife.
  • Pet food and garbage: Do not store pet food or garbage outside. This behavior is construed as feeding the bears and can cause them to become a nuisance.

Follow Proper Game Processing Guidelines: Residents are allowed to process their wild game & fish at their housing unit with the following restrictions: skinning, gutting, curing and sectioning must occur only in the garage or resident-owned shed and the garage floor must be scrubbed down promptly after finished. Waste product must be immediately disposed of (in heavy duty or contractor style garbage bags). Under no circumstances should the animal or animal carcass (whole or pieces) be visible by neighboring units.

Reporting Wildlife

Report any wildlife activity in the neighborhoods to Security Forces for immediate dispatch of JBER Law Enforcement, then to Aurora Military Housing.

By taking these steps, we can mitigate the risks associated with improper trash disposal and game processing, ensuring that our community remains safe, clean, and peaceful. Let’s all do our part to uphold the standards that make our neighborhoods a wonderful place to live.
